The State Minister for Planning, Amos Lugolobi, has advised the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) board members to establish strategic alliances and welcome the digital era in order to assist in government oversight and assessment and maintain corporate governance norms.

He made these remarks during the meeting of the new UBOS board members on November 28, 2023, at the Statistics House in Kampala.

He asked the newly appointed board members to use their skills, collective vision, and commitment for accurate data collection so that Uganda can anticipate evidence-based policies and sustainable development for years to come.

Lugolobi praised UBOS for its tremendous efforts in gathering and evaluating data, which serves as the basis for important national budgeting, economic planning, and decision-making processes.

Since its founding, UBOS has unveiled five board panel members, with Dr. Albert Byamugisha serving as the current and previous board chairman.

The other newly sworn-in board members include Dr. Allen Kabagenyi, Ms. Rosette Nakavuma, Ms. Irene Birungi, Dr. Rogers Matte, Dr. Jacob Opolot, and Dr. Chris Mukiza, UBOS executive director.

Dr. Byamugisha said that statistics are crucial for informed decisions, and it’s the duty of the board to ensure UBOS continues to provide precise and timely information.

He expressed the importance of accurate data in guiding effective policy-making.

Principle Judge Flavian Zeija, who presided over the ceremony as the board members took the oath of office for their new positions, pushed them to focus on the newest and most cutting-edge statistical trends being applied globally.

UBOS is the principal data collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination agency responsible for coordinating and supervising the National Statistical System.
