The third deputy Prime Minister, Rukia Isanga Nakadama, has emphasised the need to promote agriculture and food security in Busoga Kingdom.

Nakadama made these remarks while speaking at the Busoga Kingdom on November 24, 2023, while the Busoga Consortium for Development and Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Agriculture University.

According to Nakadama, through this cooperation, China Agriculture University will share more than agricultural practices and also offer agriculture scholarships for people from Busoga.

“This corporation seeks to prioritise rural transformation with a focus on sharing modern agriculture practices as well as knowledge exchange through education, joint research, and training, among others,” Nakadama said.

She also appreciated the choice of crops such as maize, soybeans, and cassava as suitable enterprises for the pilot project.

These friendly crops have been historically linked with the Busoga during a time when the region was referred to as the food basket of Uganda.

According to researchers, Busoga has the potential to become Uganda’s largest food basket if modern agricultural practices are adopted and incorporated into both subsistence and commercial farming.
