The territorial police in Jinja district have in custody a 27-year-old mother for the alleged double murder of her two children.

In a statement released by police on November 7, 2023, Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, stated that the suspect, identified as Rose Mwase, a 27-year-old housewife, in Buwajinaikazi village in Jinja district, allegedly murdered her two children that she shared with Kagoda Paul, a 23-year-old man.

The murdered children were identified as Babirye China, aged 5, and Claire Sowati, a one-year-old victim.

According to Enanga, the incident occurred on October 27, 2023, when the suspect buried the children in the sitting room when her husband, Kagoda Paul, was doing casual work in Ngongwe, Buikwe district.

“The father of the children returned on October 30, 2023, and found his wife alone at home and their two children missing,” Enanga said.

He stated that the suspect failed to give a clear explanation to her husband, which prompted him to inquire from their neighbours, and they told him that children were seen three days ago playing around their home.

Enanga said that the husband of the suspect searched around the home and later established a fresh grave within their sitting room, where his daughters had been buried.

Enanga stated that the suspect was arrested immediately and handed over to Budondo police station, and the scene was cordoned off and revisited on October 31, 2023, by a team of investigative and forensic experts from the Kiira region.

He explained that the father of the suspect, who is a traditional healer, was arrested to help in investigations after the headless body of Sowati Claire was found missing. Her chopped-off head was recovered, along with her elder sister’s body.

According to Enanga, further arrangements are in place to recover the headless body of Sowati, which the suspect admitted to having buried in the cassava garden next to their compound.

The police strongly condemned the horrific acts by parents who express violence against children who are supposed to be protected. Every child has a right to life, no matter the circumstances under which they live.
