Police in Yumbe have in custody six teachers and an invigilator for possession of unauthorised material and disturbance in an examination room.
Jennifer Kalule, spokesperson for the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB), while speaking at the security press conference at the police headquarters on October 23, 2023, stated that on Thursday, October 19, 2023, while examinations were underway, the suspects accessed the examination hall with power banks, smartphones, and a laptop under the pretext of charging them, an act that was very suspicious to the scout, causing them to report to the police.
The group charged are Julius Caeser Obbo, a teacher of Economics, Josephine Angukoru, a teacher of Biology, Boniface Ntibirigirwa, Godwin Wasswa, James Bamukabire, Emmanuel Okello, and Hussein Sadam, all teachers of Nampita Secondary School, together with an invigilator, Oryema Bosco Oryema.
She stated that the initial investigations indicated that the smart phone of one of the teachers, called Julius Obbo was found containing answers for the biology practical examination.
Kalule warned candidates, teachers, invigilators, scouts and members of the public against involvement in any form of examination malpractice, or else they risk jail.
“The public is hereby notified that unauthorised possession of any material that is purported to be a UNEB examination is an offence under the UNEB Act 2021 Section 25 (1),” Kalule stated.
She noted that a person found in possession of such a thing commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding Shs 20 million, or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.
She said the ongoing S.4 exams has entered the second week, noting that the first week was largely successful without major incidents.
Kalule noted that two Special Needs Education (SNE) Candidates, who were both sickle cell sicklers from different schools, died in the course of the first week.
This year’s national examinations began on Friday, October 13, with the briefing of UCE candidates and run until November 17, 2023, while PLE will be conducted from November 7 to 9, 2023, and UACE will be conducted from November 10 to December 1, 2023. 7 September 2023
