President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has authorized an official burial for the late Honorable Henry K. Magumba Kyemba in accordance with Article 99 of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.

Speaking on behalf of the government, spokesperson Ofwono Opondo announced on Saturday, October 21, 2023, that preparations for the official burial would be carried out by a hybrid committee comprising representatives from the national organizing committee and the Kyemba family.

The program outlined by Opondo stated that a memorial service would be held at Namirembe Cathedral on Monday, followed by a session at parliament on Tuesday for Members of Parliament to pay their respects.

On Wednesday, the late Hon. Kyemba’s body will be taken to Jinja City Hall for a joint local council session and a church service at Bugembe Cathedral. The final resting place for Hon. Kyemba will be on Thursday.

In addition to covering all burial expenses, the government will provide meals for mourners starting Sunday until Thursday, October 26, when Hon. Kyemba’s body will be laid to rest. Security arrangements at all venues will be ensured by the government, with the police overseeing the official burial ceremonies, including a three-gun salute during the burial.

Hon. Kyemba was described by Opondo as an illustrious civil servant, Rotarian, and political leader. His passing leaves a void not only for those who knew him personally or worked alongside him, but also for those who sought inspiration from his political and public service career.

Hon. Kyemba, who passed away on October 19, 2023, at the age of 84, had served as the Principal Private Secretary to President Obote and as the Health Minister during Amin’s regime.

An official burial in Uganda is a special recognition granted by the President, with the government shouldering all associated expenses. This honor is typically reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation.
