The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has revealed that between January 2022 to June 2023, only Shs7.99 billion was recovered from corrupt officials.
According to a report from the IGG, 3504 complaints were registered, 1528 corruption cases were concluded, and 38.7 billion is recommended for recovery.
Administrative sanctions implemented were 700, prosecutions concluded were 92, and the convictions were 43 in total.
Beti Kamya of the IGG urged Ugandans to own the war against corruption instead of leaving it to the government because the corruption vice denies every citizen the quality of services that they deserve.
“The Inspectorate has prioritised prevention as the main approach to the elimination of corruption and the promotion of strict adherence to the rule of law. This will be achieved through the mobilisation of citizens to own the war against corruption and empowering citizens to have a mindset change towards the evil of corruption,” Kamya said.
She also revealed that out of the 32,605 public servants required to declare their wealth as per the Leadership Code of Conduct, only 26,541 were obliged by the requirement, and of those, 311 servants’ wealth was investigated.
According to a report from Transparency International, Uganda is ranked 142 out of 180 in the global corruption perception index, and Uganda loses about Shs10 trillion annually to corruption.
