The general public has been cautioned by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in a statement dated September 1, 2023, regarding the rising trend of civilians misusing military attire.

Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the Defence spokesperson, voiced this issue of the rising trend of civilians wearing military insignia, such as berets, lanyards, and clothing, as these items are meant to be exclusive to the security forces.

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye also warned of legal action against anyone who abuses military uniforms.

“We want to reiterate our caution to those individuals who are wearing the mentioned items. Disregarding this warning will result in legal consequences for those individuals if these items are still being used,” Brig. Gen. Kulayigye said.

The Uganda Gazette, under general notice No. 1013 of 2019 dated September 18, 2019, issued a notice describing and prohibiting members of the public from donning military wear and decorations or so nearly resembling them.

Section 160 of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Act, and 2005 subsection 2 part (c) prohibits none members of the security force from receiving, possessing, selling, or delivering any such attire mentioned above, among others.
