On August 31, 2023, the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB) released the results of the examinations, which were held in June 2023, at the office of the President.

According to Hellen Mukakarisa, the Executive Director of UNMEB, a total of 50,942 candidates from 123 licenced nursing and midwifery training institutions were registered for the June 2023 UNMEB semester examination. The examinations were hosted by 118 UNMEB-accredited examination centres.

Mukakarisa said that out of the 50,942 candidates registered, 36,870 representing 72.4% were female, while 14,072 representing 27.65% were male candidates.

“Out of the 50,942 candidates that were registered for the June 2023 UNMEB semester examinations, 36,870 (72.4%) were female candidates, while fourteen thousand and seventy-two (14,072) (27.6%) were male candidates,” Mukakarisa said.

She further explained that out of the 50,942 candidates, 34,918 (68.6%) were continuing candidates progressing from one semester to another, while sixteen thousand and 16,024 (31.4%) candidates were in their final semester.

“Among the thirty-four thousand nine hundred and eighteen (34,918) continuing candidates, thirty thousand one hundred and twenty-two (30,122) (86.3%) continuing candidates passed their examinations and have therefore progressed to the subsequent semesters,” she said.

However, according to Mukakarisa, 383 candidates did not turn up for examinations, and these are 303 continuing candidates and 80 final semester candidates.

She also said that 4,493 continuing candidates were ungraded while 303 were absent.

“Out of the four thousand four hundred and ninety-three (4,493) ungraded candidates, four thousand three hundred and thirty-seven (4,337) will retake the papers when next offered, together with the three hundred and three (303) (0.8%) absent candidates,” she added.

Following the nursing and midwifery curricula guidance, 156 candidates will be discontinued due to exhaustion of the allowed three attempts at repeating the same paper.
