Police in Lira have arrested four suspects involved in the murder of a 65-year-old believed to be their father-in-law.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region police spokesperson, the deceased Alfred Ogwang, was a resident of Okwor-Okwor cell, Bulobo ward in Lira-City East Division.

“The murder took place on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at around 11 p.m. and was reported by Mr. Okullo Moses, the chairman LC1 of Okwor-Okwor cell,” SP Okema said.

Joshua Apita, the victim’s son-in-law, Awor Filly, the victim’s daughter, Dickens Akuri, a friend, and Scovia Akao have all been detained in connection to the murder.

It has been alleged that Apita and his wife, Filly, had a misunderstanding and ended up fighting, prompting Apita’s father, Ogwang, to intercede.

“The couple instead turned against Ogwang and beat him up using a hoe handle, which killed him on the spot,” Okema added.

According to Okema, the deceased was dumped at a distance of 100 metres, inside the pit where Marram was being excavated.

“When the chairman informed us, the scene of crime was cordoned and a case file of murder was registered at Lira-City Central Police Station,” Okema said.

The four suspects are currently being held at Lira-City CPS.
