Uganda Becomes 32nd Country to Ratify ILO Convention on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the Workplace

On August 7, 2023, Ambassador Marcel Tibaleka Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, with Mr. Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), deposited the instrument of ratification of Convention 190 (C-190) on Violence and Harassment in the Workplace at the ILO headquarters in Geneva. This ratification demonstrates Uganda’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive workplace free of violence and harassment for all.

“The ratification of Convention 190 indicates Uganda’s commitment to developing a just and fair society, ensuring a safe and respectful working environment, and safeguarding human rights and dignity in the workplace.” Ambassador Tibaleka, spoke

Director-General Houngbo commended Uganda for taking the decisive step of ratifying this significant convention. He further noted that Uganda becomes the 32nd country in the world and the 8th African country to ratify. He applauded Uganda, noting that this ratification underlines the country’s commitment, as well as the commitment of the entire region, to eliminating workplace violence and harassment.

Uganda welcomes this ratification and looks forward to working together with the ILO and the international community to fully implement Convention 190. Supporting this important convention as a whole will result in a better, safer, and fairer workplace for everybody.

The Violence and Harassment Convention, No. 190, is an international labor standard adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in June 2019. It covers workplace violence and harassment, intending to promote a safe and healthy working environment for all, embracing both the public and commercial sectors.
