LAKE VICTORIA BASIN: An Ideal Birding Spot with Millions of Bird Species

Uganda is home to over 1000 recorded bird species, including some that are endemic to the country.

The Lake Victoria Basin and Entebbe Peninsula, which lie along the Asian–East African Flyway, are a haven for millions of migratory birds that fly to Uganda each year, making it an ideal birding spot.

It is home to over 400 species of birds that thrill and excite nature lovers. Visitors can view a wide variety of birds on any day, including Malabour storks, Kites, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, weavers, and Swallows.

The notable birding spots on Lake Victoria include Mabamba Bay, which is famous for the rare shoebill stock that is sought after by nature lovers and bird enthusiasts, Lutembe Bay which is home to millions of all kinds of pale Arctic migrant and indigenous birds, it’s a habitat for more than 200 bird species, Ngamba Island and Bulaga Island.

Bird-watching is a popular hobby around the world and can present  significant economic opportunities for Uganda through sustainable tourism.

Uganda, which has 10% of the world’s bird population, has the potential to use her bird population to attract a count of World travellers to undertake birding safaris in Uganda which can improve the tourism sector.
