Education stakeholders in the West Nile Sub-region have asked the government to take complete control of pre-primary education, implying that it will sustain prevention of early marriages and adolescent pregnancies.
During a regional consultation on Uganda’s education policy review, chaired by former Education minister, Nuwe Amanya Mushega, City.Mr. Raymond Ombere, the Arua City education officer, explained that monitoring pre-primary schools will ensure children of the right age are in the right place.
“It is a death blow to leave this pre-primary to the private sector. Any house built on weak ground is certain to collapse. I would advise the government to treat pre-primary education as a serious business,” he suggested.
The Education Policy Review Commission (EPRC) is touring the country to gather input on how education policy should be revised. The policy review mission garnered varying responses from educationists across the region, with some in support and others preferring the education standards of the 1960s. Following the completion of the nationwide poll, the EPRC will analyze the responses and publish a report that is expected to restructure the education and sports sectors.
