πΊπ¬ IMF approves Shs 442bn for Uganda’s ‘steady path to full recovery’
πThe International Monetary Fund (IMF) board has approved the immediate release of approximately Shs442 billion ($120 million) under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement. This is part of medium-term financial assistance to low-income countries, such as Uganda, to implement economic programs that make significant progress toward a stable and sustainable macroeconomic position consistent with strong and durable purchasing power parity. Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary in the Finance Ministry has explained that Uganda is on a “steady path to full recovery, sustained growth and reform for socio-economic transformation”.

πThe Judiciary has dismissed social media reports that Chief Justice (CJ) Alfonse Owiny-Dollo is critically ill. Judiciary spokesperson, Jameson Karemani, released on Thursday June 22 stipulating that CJ Dollo, 69, travelled abroad for medical treatment and soon will be back to office since he is out of danger. He urged members of the public to disregard the unfounded and exaggerated reports.
πΊπ¬ URA to introduce body cameras to curb corruption among staff
πUganda Revenue Authority (URA) is set to introduce body cameras for staff in a move meant to combat corruption. Moses Kaggwa, the Director for economic affairs at the Ministry of Finance has disclosed that this will now make it easy to track URA officers and will ensure that they do the right thing. He explained that they have already started inviting proposals from eligible bidders to supply them with body-worn cameras. Kaggwa said that tax collectors will wear on their chest or shoulder collar to monitor and record evidence of current transactions while on the job.

πThe Police in Kasese has rescued three people from drowning in RiverΒ Nyamwamba as the water levels rose. The floods submerged Kilembe mines offices. According to the spokesperson of the Uganda Road Cross, Irene Nakasiita, Kirembe road had been cut off at Namuhunga junction. The affected areas include Nyakasanga, Saluti A&B, Mawa market, Kitooro, and Kisagazi. Environment experts in the district have previously warned of more floods if sand mining on the banks does not stop in the areas of Rukooki and Kanyangeye.

π SOMALIA: Auditor General recovers $21 million in mega corruption scandal
πAccording to Ahmed Isse Gutale, the Auditor General of Somalia, up to $21 million is missing from government coffers, indicating extensive public fund theft during the last five years. The money was taken out of government accounts between March 8 and April 19, 2018, according to the results of a forensic audit. He stated in a statement on Wednesday that he sent the report to the Office of the Prosecutor General as the money had not been spent in accordance with the law.

πMore than 2750 civilians have been killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the year started, human rights organisations have said. The forum of international NGOs in DRC said Thursday that the existence of armed groups in several places is escalating the cycle of violence, causing massive displacement of locals. This has worsened an already dangerous humanitarian situation.

Alison expressed support for the Group of Experts and the work they carry out, and pledged cooperation from all member nations with the Group of Experts. He faulted the human rights abuses and the violations of international humanitarian law documented in the report by armed groups including M23, Forces DΓ©mocratiques de LibΓ©ration du Rwanda (FDLR), Allied Defence Forces (ADF) and CoopΓ©rative pour le DΓ©veloppement du Congo (CODECO).
