Ms. Mary Akol, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, has been proclaimed the winner of the Bukedea District LC V by-election on Thursday, June 15th, 2023.

Akol won with 79692 votes on a declaration form signed by Mr. Joel Mugenyi, the district returning officer, over her Independent opponent, Mr. Lokwiaki Tychicus Ebukalin, who received 4941 votes as the first runner-up.

Mr. Sam Oita Odeke of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) received 2343 votes after withdrawing from the race just hours after voting began.

“As the returning officer for the Bukedea electoral district, I declare Mary Akol, who received the most votes, the winner for the Bukedea electoral district,” Mugerwa announced.

Ms. Akol received 464 votes in the Obul Railway Polling Station in Kachumbala County, Lokwiski received 41 votes, and Oita received 14 votes. Ms. Akol received 509 votes in Sula Primary Polling Station, Lokwiski received 3, and Oita received 5, giving NRM’s Akol a large margin.

Akol also received 313 votes at the Mukura Church of Uganda Polling Station, while Lokwiski and Oita received one and three votes, respectively.

A number of polling locations had poor turnout, according to the declaration forms.

According to reports, some voters avoided voting owing to allegations of electoral irregularities.

Akol will replace Moses Olemukan, who died in December of last year.
