Dr. Besigye, after months of silence, has given his first statement about the homosexuality bill that was passed into law by the President, asking Ugandans not to judge anyone based on their sexual orientation and for Ugandans to leave his family alone.

According to Dr. Besigye, as a Christian, he considers homosexuality a sin, but also in the book of St. Luke 6:37, it’s clear, “Don’t’ judge, and you will not be judged.

“First of all, I would like to categorically say that I believe in the Christian faith and scriptures; I consider homosexuality a sin, but I also know that we are not allowed to judge others as Christians; don’t condemn and you won’t be condemned, so this business of Ugandans always going after my family because of my son’s sex orientation needs to stop; as a family, we are dealing with a lot,” Dr. Besigye said.

He further wondered why Ugandans are so concerned about condemning his family for his wife’s support of gay people and not condemning other sins too, like fornication and adultery, and only demonizing homosexuality.

“Why are they being selective in picking sins, yet very high-profiled clerics fornicate and commit adultery, but they don’t condemn it, yet my family is at the center of everyone’s lips? As parents, we give birth to the body, not the mind. How some of our children end up is not by our choice, but we can’t abandon them either; as Christians, we have to forgive and embrace them,’ said Besigye.

His wife Winnie Byanyima, UNAIDS Executive Director, has been very vocal in criticizing the Ugandan government for passing the law and the President for assenting to it, warning of the consequences of the piece of legislation to fight against AIDS/HIV.
