The National Unity Platform Party’s top leaders have attacked the European Union delegation of ambassadors in Uganda for ignoring their spirited plea to cut diplomatic ties with the government of Uganda.

According to Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, the European Union is not doing enough to respond to their requests but instead has continued to maintain steady diplomatic relations and extend huge support to Uganda.

During the May 5th meeting with the EU delegation of ambassadors at the NUP premises in Makerere-Kavule in Kampala, Bob Wine is quoted as having expressed disappointment in the manner in which the European Union has remained a strong diplomatic ally with the government of Uganda despite their spirited protest against human rights violations.

“While recognizing some of the steps the EU has taken in the promotion of the rule of law in Uganda, our firm belief remains that democracy and respect for human rights should be preconditions for international cooperation,” Kyagulanyi hinted.

Kyagulanyi told the EU that it’s not just enough to keep issuing statements condemning human rights violations in Uganda; they must do more than these actions, including denying huge funding to Uganda.

On Friday, May 5th, the European Union delegation of ambassadors in Uganda denied appearing in the joint media briefing with the National Unity Platform Party leaders that was intended to be aired live on major TV and radio stations across the country.

The delegation later opted for a brief closed-door meeting with NUP leaders led by Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bob Wine, in which they rejected various proposals, including a request by NUP for additional funding to facilitate demonstrations purported to be against human rights violations in Uganda.

It is said that the delegation was concerned about the deliberate presentation of fake victims of human rights violations to international bodies just to seek funding.

“Ultimately, Gen. Museveni will never listen to statements of condemnation, however strongly-worded. He will only listen to firm action by the people of Uganda and the friends of Uganda,” the NUP leader said.
