When it comes to both international and domestic tourism, very little is said about Eastern Uganda, specifically Kapchorwa District and its beautiful rugged landscape.

Kapchorwa town in the Eastern region of Uganda is the main municipal, commercial, and administrative center of Kapchorwa District locates in Sebei sub region.

The district borders Kween District to the northeast and east, Sironko to the south, and Bulambuli District to the west and northwest. It is mostly dominated by the Kalenjin people which include subgroups like Nandi, Pokot, and Sabin.

Kapchorwa has the most beautiful tourism destinations one must visit;

Sipi Falls:

A key attraction for visitors to the district. The site comprises three big waterfalls and the walk to the bottom is the main attraction. Reaching the summit could take about three to five hours of hiking. As for humanitarians that are interested in people and stories, you can take turns to do some community walks through the homesteads that live around. Other activities include cave exploration.

Mt. Elgon National Park;

The park is located at the border between Uganda and Kenya. It offers refuge to rare vegetation species as well as other wildlife species like elephants, hyenas, buffaloes, forest monkeys (black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys), antelope families, and many bird life that make up about 300 in the park including the endangered lammergeier, blaglafecht weaver, African goshawk and others. The park offers opportunities for mountain climbing, game, and flora viewing.

Mount Elgon is also home to the largest caldera in the world with an 8-kilometer diameter and a circumference of 40 kilometers. Attractions within the caldera include hot springs, crater lakes, the swam gorge with a heavy population of wild game.

Pian Upe Game Reserve:

The reserve is found in Nakapiripirit district at the northern boundary of Kapchorwa district. The reserve is habitat for significant numbers of game species due to the various rivers and green river valleys. The animals include buffaloes, hyenas, zebras, and ostriches among others.

Kapkwai Exploration center:

The center is a facility designed for training local communities and visitors on ecological aspects and sustainable use of Parks’ resources. Some trails have been developed from the center to important ecological points, Sipi falls and the caldera. While there you can visit caves, waterfalls, and escarpments as well as see some primates and birds.

Kapchorwa should be one of the must visit places on your schedule if you’re thinking of spending your next vacation in Uganda.
