🇺🇬 Education Minister challenges NCHE to routinely monitor learning institutions
📌The Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni has challenged the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to routinely monitor higher institutions of learning to ensure maximum quality.  The Minister urged the Council to be vigilant in upholding education quality standards in the country citing that the the liberalisation of the education sector came with many players opening up higher institutions of learning. She was speaking at the launch of the NCHE’s 20-year celebrations, the Minister.
“While the increase in the number of institutions expresses accessibility of higher education, I want to challenge NCHE to assure the quality of education and guarantee routine monitoring of the institutions of higher education, to promote the credibility of our education and products,” she said.

🇺🇬 Bride goes missing two days to her wedding day
📌Police say Bushira Najjuuko, 24, a businesswoman at Zainab Aziza building in Nakasero, Kampala, has been missing since Friday, two days to her wedding day. She had been living with her parents in Katereke Cell, Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso District. Her mother, Aisha Nalukenge is in fear for the life of her daughter. According to Police, the missing bride gave a boda boda rider her changing dresses to take home after saloon makeup before her disappearance.

🇺🇬 EC hands over former premises to UNRA for flyover
📌The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama, has today officially handed over the former EC premises to the leadership of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). The official handover ceremony has been held at the former EC head office on Tuesday morning. Uganda National Roads Authority is set to demolish the facilities on the land at Plot 55 Jinja Road, Kampala, to pave way for the ongoing development of the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP). Byabakama has commended the leadership and staff of the Commission who he said have shown resilience over the past 27 years and managed to serve and successfully deliver five general elections since 2001 using the improvised premises as the head office.

🇺🇬 Man killed for failing to pay Shs1000 for rolex 
📌Police have kicked off man hunt for a one Emmy, the operator of a chapatti stall in Gulu east division, Gulu city, who stabbed and killed Odong Nyige, a resident of Karom cell, Pece-Laroo Division. According to Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, Odong ordered for a rolex of shs1000 and refused to pay which resulted into a fight and in the process, Emmy who had a knife stabbed Odong several times killing him instantly. Enanga said the suspect has since fled  and efforts to look for him have kicked off.

🇺🇬 Apes of Uganda exhibition still on at the Uganda Museum
📌Uganda National Museum in partnership with the University of Michigan launched the Apes of Uganda Exhibition at the Uganda Museum in Kamwokya Kampala. Dr. Gladys Kalema Zikusooka, one of the keynote speakers at the event said the exhibition is the first one of its kind in the history of Uganda. She said many of the previous exhibitions have been focusing more on Uganda as a destination without necessarily focusing on a particular species. The Apes of Uganda exhibition is set to continue until August 30, 2023.

🇺🇬 Foreigners arrested for attempting to acquire Ugandan passports
📌 The Police has issued a stern warning to foreign nationals in the habit of fraudulently attempting to acquire Ugandan passports. During the Uganda Police weekly press brief on Monday, Simon Peter Mundeyi, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs identified among others Nishimye Gadiel, a Burundian, who claimed to originate from Kiruhura District.

🇺🇬 Police warns motorists to be cautious of heavy rains that cut off roads in Namanve, Banda 
📌Police have issued a traffic alert to motorists following the Tuesday morning downpour. In a brief statement, Police informed road users that water levels along Jinja Road specifically at Namanve and Banda are increasing thus affecting the swift traffic flow. This particular spot at Banda was recently rehabilitated by the Kampala City Authority.

🇺🇬 Gender minister Amongi leads delegation  to New York women meeting
📌Gender minister Betty Amongi has led a Ugandan delegation to the 67th session of the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.  The conference taking place at the UN headquarters started on March 6 and is structured under the theme: Innovation and Technological Change, and Education in the Digital Age for Achieving Gender Equality and the Empowerment of all Women and Girls.

🇺🇬 Rwampara DHO arrested over corruption 
📌Rwampara District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Allan Twesigomwe has been arrested over allegations of forgery and mismanagement of funds meant for Village Health Team (VHTs) activities and primary health care funds. Twesigomwe was arrested on Monday evening. Jane Muhindo, the Rwampara RDC said that they acted on reports from the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to have Twesigome arrested and investigated. Muhindo says that the suspect made requisitions for primary health care funds meant for staff allowances, but never paid to the rightful owners, but instead allegedly paid ghost people who signed on the behalf of health workers.

🌍 KENYA: Stop the sideshows and support Ruto administration – Moody Awori
📌Kenya’s ninth Vice President Moody Awori has called on politicians to stop what he called “sideshows” and support President William Ruto’s administration deliver its manifesto. Speaking on Monday at his home, said politicians should be uniting Kenyans at this time.
“Elections are gone, Kenya Kwanza is in place, let it follow its manifesto and let us root together and ensure the constitution is respected and all will be well,” he said.

🌍 DRC: Alert as threat of volcanic eruption looms
📌Volcanologists say they have observed a glow at the top of the Nyamulagira volcano in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo caused by a movement of lava at shallow depths towards the central crater of the Nyamulagira volcano, according to the latest data. Nyamulagira’s last major eruption was in 2011, its biggest eruption in 100 years.

🌍 SOUTH SUDAN: Ethiopian Prime Minister holds peace discussions with President, VP
📌Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed landed in Juba on Monday for talks with President Salva Kiir on bilateral issues amid tensions within South Sudan over the 2018 peace agreement. Dr Abiy also held discussions with First Vice President Riek Machar on the challenges hindering the implementation of the peace deal.
“The two leaders Kiir and Abiy headed the Government  Secretariat where they held a meeting on bilateral matters with regional dimension including the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement,” acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deng Dau Male said.

🌍 NIGERIA: Old banknotes still legal – Central Bank
📌The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says old banknotes will remain legal tender until the end of the year in line with a judgement made by the supremecourt earlier this month. Banks have also been directed to comply with the court’s decision that allowed old and new naira notes to run concurrently until 31 December.

🌍 MALAWI: Government declares state of national disaster as Tropical Storm death toll reaches 99
📌The death toll in Malawi from Tropical Storm Freddy rose to 99 on Monday, with 85 deaths recorded in the City of Blantyre alone, the authorities said. The country is struggling to contain the effects of the storm, which has wreaked devastation particularly in 10 of the country’s southern region districts. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have destroyed houses, washed away roads and bridges, flattened crop fields and disrupted power generation. The Malawian Government has declared a state of national disaster in the most affected districts, appealing for help locally and globally for the tens of thousands of people who have been left without food and shelter.

🌍 Ivory Coast to host ‘World Environment Day’ 
📌Ivory Coast announced Monday that it will host this year’s World Environment Day on June 5 on the theme of “solutions to plastic pollution.” More than 150 countries will take part in the UN-organized World Environment Day event, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Jean-Luc Assi, Ivory Coast’s Minister of environment and sustainable development, referred to plastic pollution as “a menace to us all.”

🌍 China to re-open borders to foreign tourists 
📌China has said it will reopen its borders to foreign tourists for the first time in three years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic by restoring the issuance of all types of visas from Wednesday. The removal of this last cross-border control measure imposed to guard against COVID-19 comes after authorities last month declared victory over a recent surge in the virus.
