A section of the National Unity Platform Members of Parliament who are against supporting homosexuality on Monday boycotted a high-level meeting summoned by Bobi Wine at party headquarters in Kamwokya, in Kampala.
According to a source who attended the meeting, the Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, MPs Kazibwe, Abdel Bwanika, and Betty Nambooze are among the legislators who skipped the meeting.
It is said the top-level meeting was summoned by the NUP principal to draw up immediate strategies that will ensure that their members of Parliament are never part of the huge force behind the recently introduced anti-homosexuality 2023 bill in Parliament.
The source further revealed that Kyagulanyi spent several hours during the Monday meeting, in which he was the chair, explaining reasons as to why NUP MPs should not be part of the bill.
According to an MP who also attended the meeting, this was about discussing methods of fighting the homosexuality bill in Parliament and new ways of discrediting the government since the previous narratives seem to have borne no fruit.
It’s said the meeting that was attended by less than a half of NUP MPs did not resolve positively in the interest of Kyagulanyi, a move that left him quite disappointed and short on ideas on how to move forward with the struggle since all attempts put forward have not resulted in any noticeable change and also the party is surrounded by moles.
“The principal feels the party and members are not doing enough to cause change; some of the members are not real NUP; they are masquerading as NUP, yet they work for the regime; that is why some did not attend; he doubts their loyalty,” said one of the MPs.
Bobi Wine later tweeted that he spent the day with the members of the NUP parliament, discussing several matters of great importance to the nation.
“We reminded ourselves of the urgent duty we have to advance the cause of our people,” tweeted Bobi Wine.
Jackson Kigundu wondered why the NUP’s outspoken MPs were left out of the meeting. He suspects legislators could have been excluded from the meeting due to their open anti-homosexuality positions.
