The Serere County Legislative By-election has been called for Mr. Emmanuel Omoding.
Independent lawmaker Omoding is the son of late lawmaker Patrick Okabe, who was killed in a car crash last year.
He won the race with 15,638 votes, beating out the other four contenders. His closest rival was Phillip Oucor of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who received 13,206 votes.
Alice Alaso, candidate for the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), received 3,335, Martin Onguruco, Independent, received 2,523, and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), got 1,252.
According to Ms. Sylvia Nangendo Cheptegei, the returning officer for Serere District, the total number of valid votes was 35,954, the number of rejected votes was 812, and the total number of tallied ballot papers was 36,766. There were 170 spoilt ballots.
For this reason, and in line with section 58(1) of the Parliamentary Elections act (as amended), I, Nangendo, the returning officer for the Serere electoral district, proclaimed Omoding, the candidate who received the most votes, to be the elected candidate for the Serere County constituency.
Omoding like his late father Patrick Okabe’s shares the same NRM views.
To carry on his father’s legacy, Omoding promised in his victory address to work with the current government and has scheduled a meeting with the president.
