Former PM Dr. Rugunda Appointed Gulu University Chancellor

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda as the new Chancellor for Gulu University.

Dr. Rugunda will replace Prof. Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanjawho served in the same capacity since October 2014.

Rugunda on learning of the appointment, expressed his gratitude to the President and revealed his willingness to perform in the capacity as the Chancellor at Gulu University.

“Yes it’s true I have been appointed as the Chancellor of Gulu University,” Dr. Rugunda confirmed

He also added that he will be installed today Friday 24th  February 2023.

Section 30 of Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2006 indicates that there shall be a Chancellor for each Public University who shall be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the University Council.

“The Chancellor shall hold office for a period of four years but shall be eligible for re-appointment for one more term,” the Act indicates.

Ruhakana Rugunda was born 7 November 1947 and is a Ugandan physician and politician who was Prime Minister of Uganda from 2014 to 2021.

He has held a long series of cabinet posts under President Museveni since 1986.

He served as Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Internal Affairs from 1994 to 1996, and 2003 to 2009 respectively.

He was also Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2011, and Minister of Health from 2013 to 2014.

Currently, Rugunda is the President’s Special Envoy for Special Duties.
