The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has hailed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for setting up a functional and independent judicial system in Uganda.

This comes just a day after two legislators of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Muhammad Ssegirinya of Kawempe North and Allan Ssewanyana Makindye West, were granted bail by the Masaka high court.

While addressing the media on Tuesday morning, DP spokesman Fred Mwesigwa revealed that as DP, they welcomed the news of the release of two legislators with happiness because it showed that there was fairness and justice being practised in Uganda.

“As DP, we want to applaud President Museveni and the judiciary for practising the rule of law and following the constitution of Uganda,” he said.

Mwesigwa called the DPP to quicken up investigations with the police so that the accused can receive justice in time.

He also called up the Chief Justice, Hon. Alphonso Owiny Odollo, to grant fair and speedy trials to all accused persons in Uganda to reduce case backlogs and delay justice.

On Monday, March 13, Masaka High Court Judge Lawrence Tweyanze granted Shs20 million in cash bail to MPs  Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya and a non-cash bail of Shs50 million to each of their sureties to allow them out of Luzira-Kigo prison.

The duo have been in prison for nearly 2 years (since September 2021) on charges of murder and attempted murder related to the spate of killings in the Masaka sub-region in 2021.

DP also praised President Museveni, who appointed Norbert Mao as the minister of justice and constitutional affairs and who has vowed to ensure speedy and fair trials in all courts across the country.

Mwesigwa added that on Tuesday morning, MP Muhammad Ssegirinya’s mother and Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Mariam Wangadya, met Minister Mao and discussed the way forward for the case.
