🇺🇬 13,221 students to graduate at Makerere University 73rd graduation
📌Makerere University has Monday held its 73rd graduation ceremony with a total of 13,221 students set to graduate in different disciplines. Ritah Namisango, the University Spokesperson says the week long graduation ceremony will be presided over by the University Vice Chancellor professor. She said 6,809 of the graduands are female whereas 6412 are male. A total of 102 are PhD students, 1,378 are Masters students, 108 are postgraduate diploma and 35 are undergraduate diploma. According to the programme, students from the colleges of Natural Sciences, Health Sciences as well as School of Law are slated to graduate today.

🇺🇬 President Museveni assents to  Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill to streamline development for the fishery sector 
📌President Museveni has assented to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill which is set to streamline development for the fishery sector. This includes instituting a surveillance unit on water bodies under the control of training and command of the Uganda Police. The Bill proposes that the Chief Fisheries Officer becomes the licensing officer. Agricultural Minister, Frank Tumwebaze has welcomed the move stating that it will consolidate and reform management of fisheries, its products and aquaculture.

🇺🇬 Vice President Alupo to represent Uganda at World Governing Council Summit 
📌Vice President Jessica Alupo has arrived in Dubai where she is representing Uganda at the World Governing Council Summit (WGC). Alupo went to Dubai at the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. She was received at Dubai International airport by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of UAE- Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other senior UAE Government officials. The Vice President is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeje Odongo and the Minister of Public Service Wilson Muruli Mukasa. She will join 20 heads of state and other government leaders at the three (3) day Global Summit Organization.

🇺🇬 Experts urge Ministry of Health to issue directive to schools to carryout Tuberculosis screening during start of academic term
📌Advocates of better health have recommended that the Ministry of Health issues a directive requiring schools to carryout Tuberculosis screening especially during the establishment of every academic term. Behavioral change communication specialist at the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program Sulaiman Kato says this will help the country attain its commitment of ending TB by the year 2030. This was said during a knowledge sharing engagement with media practitioners at the Esela Country Hotel in Najjera.

🇺🇬 KCCA cautions entertainment and worship centres against sound pollution
📌Kampala Capital City Association has notified proprietors and managers of places of entertainment and worship across the metropolitan area of Kampala to manage obstructive sound in accordance with the national environment noise standard and control act. Authorities issued guidelines that no one is allowed to exceed volume 75 in busy places from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and volumes kept at 50 from 10:00 pm to 6:00 AM.

🇺🇬 Uganda Airlines to fly to Lagos, Abuja 
📌Uganda Airlines will soon start direct flights to Lagos and Abuja after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Nigeria and Uganda. On Friday, the Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen Jeje Odongo met Nigeria’s Minister for Aviation, Hadi Sirika in Kampala as the two principals discussed several issues related to aviation industry of both countries. Sirika informed his host that the federal government of Nigeria has reviewed its Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Uganda as part of efforts to facilitate direct air connectivity between the two countries.

🇺🇬 Uganda, Kenya discuss bilateral relations 
📌The Ugandan Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire has met his counterpart from Kenya, Dr. Korir Sing’Oei and discussed several issues of mutual interest to both countries. During the meeting,  Bagiire looked forward to more engagements and deeper bilateral cooperation. He informed his host that Uganda was preparing to host the next Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) with Kenya in August 2023 and AMISOM troop contributing countries’ summit soon. He briefed his host about the forthcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit and Group of Seventy-Seven Plus China (G77 + China) to be held back-to-back in Kampala in December 2023  to which Kenya and other members states will be invited to attend at the highest level.

🌍 KENYA: Anglican Church rejects Church Of England’s authorization of same-sex marriages 
📌The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) on Sunday made its objection to a decision by the Church of England allowing priests to preside over same-sex couples known to its congregation terming the decision as a departure from true biblical doctrine.
“Having lost all theological and doctrinal legitimacy, the liberal churches are using their political dominance to secularize the church by normalizing all manner of sin,” read  part of a statement.

🌍 ERITREA: US supported rebels in Tigray conflict – President Afwerki 
📌Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has accused the US of supporting Tigrayan rebels during the recently concluded civil war in northern Ethiopia. In a Sunday interview with local media, the President claimed that the peace deal signed between Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was rushed by the US to prevent the rebels from losing in the battlefield.

🌍 BURKINA FASO: Twelve civilians killed in attack 
📌At least 12 civilians have been killed in an attack in northern Burkina Faso. Locals in Kossi province, close to the border with Mali, explained to the Media that armed men on motorbikes stormed the village of Sanakadougou, killed and looted animals and goods. It is alleged the assailants were members of the Islamist insurgency that has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes in Burkina Faso and in neighbouring Mali and Niger.

🌍 Malawi drops charges against anti-corruption chief 
📌Malawi has dropped criminal charges against the head of the anti-corruption agency, Martha Chizuma following pressure from the country’s main donors and local civil society groups. She was facing charges of criminal defamation over a leaked audio in which she allegedly made remarks suggesting that a number of senior government officials and some judicial officers were hindering the fight against corruption.
“I decided to discontinue the criminal case against Ms Chizuma in line with the prescriptions of the constitution and other relevant laws,” Masauko Chamkakala, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said.

🌍 Chad to try rebel soldiers accused of killing President Deby 
📌Chad has today Monday begun trying 150 rebels accused of causing the death of President Idriss Déby. The trial has taken place in Kléssoum, in a high security prison. The suspects belong to the Front for Concord and Change in Chad (FACT), the rebel movement which launched an offensive to overthrow Chad’s government from its rear bases in Libya in 2021. They are being charged with terrorism, enlisting child soldiers, mercenarism, undermining state security, and assassination of a sitting president.

🌍 Turkey orders 113 arrests linked to collapsed buildings probe 
📌Turkey has decided to thoroughly investigate anyone suspected of responsibility for the collapse of buildings in the country’s catastrophic earthquakes, having already ordered the arrest of 113 suspects. Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said that 131 suspects had so far been identified as responsible for the collapse of some of the thousands of buildings in the 10 provinces affected by the earthquakes.
