The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB), in conjunction with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), have embarked on a countrywide exercise to register learners in secondary schools to get National Identification Numbers (NINs).

According to Rosemary Kisembo, the Executive Director at NIRA, registration desks have been set up at all boma grounds in all major cities countrywide.

“As a result, students in secondary schools are encouraged to take advantage of this holiday in order to determine their NIN registration status. Visit the Boma grounds or NIRA offices nearest to you,” she said.

She noted that every learner is expected to present the following requirements:

  1. a copy of the parent’s national ID if alive or a copy of a blood relative’s national ID if both parents are deceased, and a letter of recommendation stating the relationship with the child.
  2. a completed NIRA enrollment form completed on behalf of the learner by either the parents, guardian, or teacher if the learner is under the age of 18, or by the learner if they are over the age of 18.
  3. Present the learner for biometric capture together with the parent’s or guardian’s original national ID cards.

However, she noted that learners who were previously registered with NIRA should first verify their registration status to determine whether to proceed with providing fresh information.

Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director, said that the exercise is aimed at collecting continuous assessments and scores with effect from term one of 2023.

All secondary schools are required to register with UNEB to be able to submit the CA scores for their learners.
