President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has donated five million shillings each to the families of ten people who died in the new year stampede at Freedom City in Kampala on December 31st.

On behalf of the President, Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo visited the site on Monday, February 2, 2023, to express condolences to the affected families.During the visit, she handed over the support offered by the president to the victims.

She said that Saturday, December 31, 2022, will forever remain a dark day for the 10 families who lost their loved ones and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to SCP Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, police have since arrested the event organizers to aid in the investigation.

According to police, the problem arose when the event’s master of ceremonies asked over 20,000 party-goers gathered at Freedom City to exit through one exit and watch a fireworks display to signal the arrival of the New Year.

“Security had locked four other exits and entries, and the revelers had to use one point of entry and exit. As a result, several victims were trapped and trampled upon as they passed through the narrow passage, which became a bottleneck for many, mostly juveniles,” Enanga explained.

Enanga also added that the event promoter, one Abbey Musinguzi, also known as Abitex, had been arrested to help with investigations.
