The Uganda People’s Defence Force has urged the public to ensure strict security vigilance ahead of festivities in the country.

On Monday, November 21st, 2022, while appearing on the NBS TV morning breeze show, UPDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye said criminal groups usually take advantage of laxity to commit offense.

While explaining the recent attacks on security units in Luweero, Kyanja, and Jinja barracks by unknown assailants, Brig. Gen. Kulayigye noted that criminality often increases during the festive season and added that criminals want to change the weapons they use.

“Criminality increases with development. As long as criminality begins to grow, you will find that criminals want to change the weapons they use,” Kulayigye said.

He stated that the Joint Security Taskforce is conducting an investigation into the recent attacks and urged the public to be more vigilant so that criminals do not take advantage of this time because they believe people are relaxed.

“We always encourage the population to be more vigilant during the festive season because the wrong people can take advantage. They think people are relaxed; foundation of security starts with individuals in collaboration with the police,” he warned.

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye also noted that this year has been quite eventful for the personnel in security and acknowledged that some attacks were executed by isolated individuals while others were the result of mistakes by the security personnel.
