Kassanda RDC, Phoebe Namulindwa has revealed that the confirmed Ebola cases have increased to 48 and that the majority of the cases are from Kikandwa village in Kalwana Sub County. Namulindwa says they have 944 contact persons undergoing surveillance. She blames the surging problem on politicians and boda boda motorists who have continued to defy the lockdown regulations.

Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong confirms that the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council of China yesterday granted zero-tariff treatment to 98% of taxable items from 10 least-developed countries in a bid to promote an open global economy. Starting from December 1 2022, China will waive all tariffs on 98% of the related imports from Uganda, Afghanistan, Benin and Burkina Faso.

Uganda Country Operations Manager for Royal Mabati, a steel manufacturing company, has been remanded to Luzira prison until 22nd November for allegedly defrauding a customer of UGX4.48m. Esther Wanjugu is accused of refusing to deliver the iron sheets to Mercilus Opio Katandi for which he had deposited the money with the company. Wanjugu appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Nakirya on Wednesday and was charged with obtaining money by false pretence.

According to Rodney Ahabwe, the head of the IGG regional office in Fort Portal, Frank Bangirana, a senior treasurer at Kitagwenda Town Council in Kitagwenda district has been arrested by the office of the Inspector General of Government (IGG) over forged academic documents that were allegedly used to acquire a job at Kitagwenda district local government as the chief financial officer when he was not qualified. Bangirana formerly served as the Chief Finance Officer at Kitagwenda district local government and is currently serving as the senior treasurer at Kitagwenda Town Council.

A notice that asked Ugandan female students at Kampala International University taking midwifery and nursing courses to take pregnancy tests or be banned from taking exams has later been withdrawn. This was after Catherine Kyobutungi, the Executive Director of African Population and Health Research Center, shared it on her Twitter page and caused an online uproar.

Kenneth Arinaitwe, the Ecobank manager in charge of direct banking explained that Ecobank Uganda has extended its financial literacy lessons to students at the Young Men Christian Association Comprehensive Institution (YMCA), as part of its 2022 theme of financial inclusion. He noted that Ecobank has pledged to fill the financial gap among the youths and for every Ugandan, through educating young people on financial literacy.

Adagchil, a new product has been introduced to help farmers access the inputs they need on credit and then pay later.

It is a “buy now, pay later“  product for farmers to access agricultural inputs, built by Juliet Aturinda who seeks to simplify the process that farmers go through to get inputs, ranging from seeds, irrigation services, micro insurance, fertilizers, among others without worrying about having money upfront.

Animal feed manufacturers under their umbrella body, Uganda Animal Feed Manufacturers Association (UGAFMA) have started the process of starting up the first agricultural polytechnic in the country. Speaking during a meeting of the members, UGAFMA Secretary General, David Waliggo said one of the biggest problems facing the local feeds industry is in terms of quality and quantities but stemming from lack of education for both dealers and farmers.

The Minister for Labour, Betty Amongi has called for more investment in research around identifying skills to tackle unemployment globally, especially among the youth. Amongi made the call at 346th session of the governing body of the International Labour Office, being held at the International Labour Organization (ILO) headquarters in Geneva.

The Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Ahimbisibwe Gad Rugaju has asked the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to work on Kanyantorogo-Bwindi road which is a tourism road to Bwindi National Park. Rugaju made remarks in a meeting with the Road Development manager of UNRA after monitoring the tourism road.

ASP Vincent Twesige the Rwenzori west region police spokesperson affirmed that police in Bunyangabu district is investigating cases registered by UMEME that includes vandalism of electricity wires in the last one year that saw UMEME lose over Shs37.3m. According to UMEME managing director, Mr. Selestino Babungi, vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Western Uganda has hit alarming levels with vandals stealing over 133km of cable in just 12 months and causing

unprecedented disruption of electricity supply.

Yesterday, France announced that it will allow a migrant ship stranded off the Italian coast in the Mediterranean with 234 migrants on board to dock at Toulon’s military port, after Italy refused to allow the NGO rescue ship to dock at one of its ports.

France’s Interior Minister has sharply criticized Rome for refusing to allow the ship to dock at an Italian port. He announced France is suspending plans to take in 3,500 migrants from Italy.

Russian authorities on Thursday summoned Maris Riekstins, the Latvia’s ambassador to the country to deliver a note of protest against what Moscow considers “illegal actions” related to the removal of monuments dating back to the Soviet era.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it has conveyed its strong protest to the head of the Latvian diplomatic mission in the country over vandalism the government has engaged in, while dismantling the monuments.

Scottish largest teaching union on Thursday announced that teachers in the country have voted overwhelmingly to strike in a dispute over no pay for their services . Any strike action by teachers would now require a fortnight’s notice.

A Kenyan court on Thursday allowed a request by the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to withdraw a $60 million corruption case against the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, citing insufficient evidence. Gachagua and his several co-accused were charged with corruption in July last year.
