πΊπ¬ People destroying the environment are worse than Kony- President Museveni
πPresident Yoweri Museveni has said that people who destroy the environment are more dangerous to human life than Lordβs Resistance Army rebel leader Joseph Kony. President Museveni made the remarks on Thursday during the NRM Liberation Day Celebrations at Kakeeka Grounds in Kakumiro Town Council. He cautioned Ugandans to desist from activities that destroy wetlands, swamps, forests, plain lands and shores of water bodies.
πΊπ¬ President Museveni hails Chief Justice overΒ effective Judiciary
πPresident Yoweri Museveni has hailed the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo for the efforts he has rendered in making the Judiciary effective. The President was on Wednesday swearing in the newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal at a ceremony that took place at State House Entebbe.Β
Β βI really congratulate the new Judges and I want to thank the Chief Justice for the passion he has put into making the judiciary effective,β he said.
The three new Justices of the Supreme Court include Stephen Musota, Madrama Christopher Martin Izama, Oscar John Kihika and Lady Justice Elizabeth Musoke.Β
πΊπ¬ Owino traders petition President Museveni over fraud
πThe traders in St Balikuddembe market (Owino) have petitioned President Museveni over fraudulent allocations of market stalls and lock-ups by the former market leadership. The traders had a meeting at Nakivubo Blue Primary School in Kampala on Wednesday where they handed over a three-page petition to the senior presidential political advisor Hadijah Namyalo.Β
πΊπ¬ MPs decry proposed budget cuts of senior citizens grants
πMembers of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection have decried proposed budget cuts on the senior citizens’ grant for the next financial year from Ugx121 billion to Shs 24 billion. While addressing a press conference at Parliament, the Chairperson of the forum, Flavia Kabahenda Rwabuhoro described the cuts as ‘extreme and would subject the elderly persons to utmost despair, vulnerability and even early death’.Β
πΊπ¬ Government to issue new driving permits to public transporters
πThe Ministry of Transport and Roads has finalised plans to amend the Traffic and Road Safety Act 2020, to include provisions establishing special courts where all drivers who cause accidents due to negligence will be prosecuted. The bill will include new permits for all drivers of public transport. The Minister of works and transport Gen Katumba Wamala and officials from the Ministry of Transport met with Public Prosecutor Jane Francis Abodo and the Principal Judge to analyse the functioning and venues of the special courts.

πThe head of Marketing and Channel Development- East Africa at Sanlam Pan Africa, Dr. Laboke Donato on January 25 announced the 2022 Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism in recognizing exceptional business journalism. The new categories in this yearβs awards include, Business and Environment, and Business and Society. Dr. Donato encouraged journalists to embrace the financial journalism awards saying that Ugandan journalists have won big in the past.
πΊπ¬ KASESE: Parliamentary Health Committee assesses Kilembe Mines Hospital
πThe Health Committee of Parliament on Wednesday carried out an oversight visit to Kilembe Mines Hospital. The committee started with a brief meeting on Tuesday evening with Kasese District and municipal council leaders. Kilembe Mines Hospital was run through a tripartite partnership with the Government and the Kasese Catholic Diocese. Upon the expiry of the partnership agreement in 2021, theΒ Diocese withdrew support and retained equipment.
πΊπ¬ MUKONO: Construction of Nkoko Bridge on River Ssezibwa commences
πThe Minister of Works and Transport Katumba Wamala, on Thursday launched the construction of Nkoko Bridge on River Ssezibwa in Mukono District. Engineer William Kabiiho, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of National Roads and Bridges in the Ministry said reconstruction will cost the Government 2.139 billion shillings.Β The bridge was washed away by heavy rains paralysing transport between the districts of Mukono and Kayunga. The function was attended by local leaders in Mukono District.
πΊπ¬ KYENJOJO: Pilgrims throng Kyenjojo for celebration
πPilgrims from different parts of the country are arriving at Katoosa parish in Kyenjojo District ahead of the January 27 celebrations in honour of St Adolf Tibeyalirwa (Ludigo) Abwooli, one of Uganda martyrs born in Katoosa, Kyenjojo District. This year’s main celebrant is Bishop Robert Muhiirwa of Fort Portal diocese. Tibeyaliwa is one of the 22 Christian believers who were executed by Kabaka Mwanga II between 1885 and 1887.Β
πΊπ¬ SOROTI: RCC launches Green Schools Climate Change workshop
πThe Soroti Resident City Commissioner, Peter Pex Paak on Wednesday launched the Green Schools Climate Change Training Workshop at Teso College Aloet in Soroti City. The launch was attended by headteachers and coordinating teachers from 10 secondary schools under the Green Schools project from Teso region. The project funded by the Swedish Embassy, aims at sensitising the public to raise awareness about climate change in 100 secondary schools across the country, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

They will also construct a two-classroom block at Kariro Moslem primary School in Rubindi Sub county.

π TANZANIA: Tundu Lissu returns home after five years in exile
πSelf-exiled Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu finally returned to the country on Wednesday afternoon after repeated cancellations of his homecoming. Lissu, a leader of the opposition Chadema party arrived aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight which landed at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam amid tight Police security.
Β βI am returning home where the political environment has changed for the better.β Lissu said.Β
π Kenya ranked 13th country with good governance in Africa
πKenya has been ranked as the 13th best-governed country in Africa according to a report released by The Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG). The report says Kenya has shown an absolute change in its good governance score since the last analysis was conducted in 2012 when it was ranked 17th. Mauritius tops the list followed by Seychelles, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Botswana, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, Senegal and Morocco.
π SUDAN: Ethiopia Prime Minister holds talks with military ruler
πEthiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is in Sudan on an official visit for talks with the countryβs military ruler, Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. EthiopiaβsΒ State Television (ETV) reported that the Prime Minister would discuss ways to boost relations between the two neighbouring countries.Β Abiyβs office said that during the discussions, the Prime Minister shared Ethiopiaβs βsolidarity with Sudan in the political dialogue process that they have embarked upon.β
πΒ NIGERIA: Military air strike kills 27 civilians
πPolice in Nigeria have confirmed reports that an air strike on January 24, 2023 targeting insurgents has killed at least 27 pastoralists in Nigeriaβs North Central Nasarawa State. The incident happened in Rukubi Community in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the Spokesperson of Nasarawa State Police Command Ramhan Nansel confirmed the incident.
Β βIt is unfortunate that such a thing happened. Twenty-seven of the herdsmen were killed after a bomb exploded in Doma LGA,βΒ Nansel said.
π Africa must learn to feed itself- Macky Sall
πThe Senegalese President and the African Union chairperson, Macky Sall, at the opening conference of the βThe Dakar 2 Summit on Feeding Africa-Food Sovereignty and Resilienceβ, warned African countries to grown enough food to feed itself. During the summit co-organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Sall said that 283 million Africans are hungry as the continent has a third of the worldβs 850 million people living with hunger.Β
βTo transform our potential into reality, we need to allocate at least 10% of the national budget to the agricultural sectorβ, Sall told the gathering that included several African heads of state.
