As the road to the 2026 general elections is narrowing, the political atmosphere keeps becoming slippery as different politicians are strategizing and polishing their manifestos to be presented to the electorates.
Several new political formations as well as new politicians are expected to come up all wishing to assume leadership and serve our motherland.
The Katonga parallel faction of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is in the final stages of registering a new political party named the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
The interim party president, Erias Lukwago, recently launched the signature collection exercise that is required by the Electoral Commission before registering a political party.
This follows the group’s official break away from FDC to form a new political party.
The faction went ahead to elect its transitional leadership with Erias Lukwago becoming the party’s interim President.
If fully registered, the PFF will become Uganda’s youngest political party ahead of 2026. However, what is not clear is whether Lukwago will remain the party president and hold its flag in the presidential elections.
Some political analysts believe that the PFF is Besigye’s project, and he’s using Lukwago as a cover and a protective gear against criticism from the general public, especially FDC supporters who believe that the Katonga faction is driven by selfish interests and not people-centered.
These believe that the four-time presidential candidate, having openly expressed his disappointment after missing out on the ballot paper in the 2021 general elections, Besigye is harboring his intentions to run again for the presidency, this time under the newly formed PFF.
The party is a creation of Besigye and is only buying time to declare its intentions to contest.
“I was very disappointed for not standing in the 2021 elections. I was angry over leaders in our party failing to understand the political dynamics of the time and instead turning to fight for political positions,” Besigye told his supporters in Rukungiri.
Besigye’s loyalty to his party FDC started declining in 2021 when a decision was made to front the current party President Patrick Amuriat for the presidential flag, which was against his will. He even campaigned for the NUP candidate, something that raised questions about his intentions.
Since 2021, he has eliminated himself from the FDC activities and started a pressure group, Red Card Front, which later resulted in the current PFF.
