What Bobi Wines’ Tour of South Africa Tells Us About His Candidature

People Power leader Bobi Wine over the weekend continued on his international tours and fundraising campaigns and this time he was in South Africa, where he was supposed to meet his supporters and also perform for them.

The show in South Africa was majorly a flop until he had to call on his Facebook partner, Julius Malema who managed to organize youth from Johannesburg to beef up the numbers. What ensued was an online battle to claim the supporters amidst photos of empty amphitheaters.

The latest tour and subsequent meetings do tell us that Bobi Wine and his group are preparing ground for what will primarily be an online propaganda campaign ahead of the general elections.

If Bobi Wine was truly interested in contesting for Presidency in Uganda, he would have spent more time on the ground among voters rather with people who will only be offering their voices on social media.

Bobi Wine has also not been heard agitating for people in the diaspora to participate in the elections even though he is a member of parliament and in very good position to table such a motion on the floor of parliament as part of the much anticipated electoral reforms.

This would imply that the singer is merely a proxy for some other parties that may intend to participate or disrupt the elections. Even his continued calls for people to get national identity cards make no sense given that they will not a pre-requisite to vote.

However, what is clear is that the diaspora is key in his plans and strategy to oust the sitting government. They have funded his campaigns and tours abroad.
