The United States government has handed over a USD 1.5 million Vehicle Maintenance Facility to the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) to enhance the country’s capacity in responding to peacekeeping and humanitarian crises.
In a press release issued on Thursday 5 December 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Uganda emphasized that the facility is a critical addition to the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capabilities Center (URDC).
“This facility will enable Uganda to maintain readiness for rapid peacekeeping deployments and provide essential support during humanitarian crises,” the statement read.
The advanced facility includes maintenance bays, a fueling station and storage, a vehicle inspection pit, administration buildings, and a security fence. These features are expected to improve operational efficiency and ensure sustained peacekeeping efforts.
The press release also highlighted that the facility builds on previous contributions, including the delivery of a second United Nations Level 2 Hospital in October 2024. This mobile hospital, designed for rapid deployment, will play a vital role in supporting regional peacekeeping and emergency operations.
“The mobile hospital will not only serve peacekeeping missions but also provide critical medical care to Ugandan citizens,” the statement added.
The U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to regional peacekeeping and humanitarian support through initiatives such as the African Peacekeeping Rapid Response Partnership (APPRP) and the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).
“These programs have strengthened Uganda’s capacity to contribute to both UN and regional peace operations, ensuring a more secure and stable future for the region,” the statement noted.
These developments highlight the growing cooperation between Uganda and the United States in addressing regional challenges and enhancing Uganda’s role in peacekeeping and humanitarian aid.
