URA Intercepts Smuggled Goods Concealed in Freezer Truck at Muwayo-Jinja Highway

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement team of Eastern Uganda intercepted a freezer truck loaded with smuggled goods at Muwayo, along Jinja Highway, on Friday, September 22, 2023.

According to URA, the staff at Namayingo Customs took action following a tip from an informant on the Kenyan side about a truck that was covertly loading goods destined for Kampala.

“We strategically deployed informers along intended routes to closely monitor the movements of this freezer truck,” the URA enforcement team said.

URA noted that they kept surveillance for the whole night until their efforts paid off at around 2 a.m., when they intercepted it at Muwayo-Jinja Highway.

“On inspection, we discovered 60 packages of assorted fabrics, kitenge, and polyester lining, among others,” stated the URA Enforcement team.

The URA team further noted that the impounded truck was transported to the Namayingo customs station.

According to the URA Enforcement Team, concealment is one of the hardest customs offences to detect, and the government loses at least $270,000 (about Shs 985 million) per day to smuggling in unpaid taxes.
