Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel have been urged to maintain vigilance and adhere to preventive measures as the Mpox outbreak intensifies.
The call was issued on January 9, 2025 by Col. Dr. Henry Kyobe, the incident commander at the Ministry of Health, during a briefing at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centers (IPSO TC) in Singo, Nakaseke District.
“Mpox is a serious public health threat that spreads through contact. We need to adhere to precautions,” said Col. Dr. Kyobe while addressing the troops.
According to Col. Dr. Kyobe, the outbreak has so far resulted in 1,552 laboratory-confirmed cases and 12 fatalities.
He outlined the main symptoms of Mpox which include fever, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, and distinctive skin lesions.
Mpox is a viral disease characterized by distinct severe sores all over the body, including the face and private parts. It was first reported in Uganda in July 2024.
In response several health officials continue to urge the public to stay vigilant, adhere to established guidelines, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their communities from the virus.
