The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have reinforced the Uganda Police Forces (UPF) traffic management in a move to address concerns about the indiscipline of drivers on Ugandan roads.
This decision comes after the UPDF leadership received complaints about the behavior of some drivers on the roads.
According to Col Deo Akiiki, the Deputy Defence and Public Information Officer, the UPDF military police traffic department will, henceforth, be working alongside the UPF to guide drivers on the proper use of the roads.
“This collaborative effort aims to ensure the safety of all road users. One of the key focus areas for the UPDF military police will be addressing the unauthorized use of military uniforms and jackets to intimidate traffic officials,” Col Akiki said.
He added that they will also be monitoring the compliance of UPDF drivers and officers with the military’s standard operating procedures while on the road.
“This will be an impromptu exercise, especially in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, to keep everyone safe on the road,” Col Akiiki added.
He further noted that the move to reinforce traffic enforcement by the UPDF comes in response to growing concerns about road safety in Uganda. He added that by leveraging the expertise and resources of the military police, the government hopes to instill better discipline among drivers and promote a culture of responsible driving.
Col Akiiki urged motorists to cooperate with the UPDF military police and UPF traffic officials as they work together to maintain order and safety on the roads.
The authorities emphasized that the initiative is aimed at ensuring the well-being of all road users, and they call upon the public to support these efforts.
