The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party spokesperson, Oyat Sharon, has called for general calmness and peace ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Oyat made these remarks while addressing members of the press at the party head offices at Uganda House in Kampala on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, where she said that 2025 will be a year of action and campaigns, and the general public should remain calm and peaceful as we plan for the 2026 elections.
“As the election atmosphere boils up, UPC calls for calmness, and let us hold our political activities with responsibility and within the framework of the law while ensuring peace at all levels of the electoral process,” Oyat said.
Oyat also asked Ugandans to participate in the general update of the national voter’s by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) from 20th January 2025 to 10th February 2025 in readiness for 2025/2026 general elections and this should be taken as first priority.
“This process of confirming the voter’s details, voting location, registering those who have turned 18 years of age, and assigning polling stations is the most important stage of the elections, which should be given the utmost attention by all stakeholders,” Oyat added.
The UPC spokesperson further urged the electoral commission and other political party leaders and stakeholders to intensify awareness of these electoral processes so that the general public can be more involved.
“UPC therefore calls upon all political party leaders at all levels and members to massively mobilize all the eligible persons to participate effectively in this key activity of updating the National Voters’ Register. We also encourage the Independent Electoral Commission to intensify the awareness campaign and civic education about such important electoral activities,” Oyat noted.
According to the electoral commission roadmap, the updating of the voter’s register will commence January 20, 2025 and conclude on February 10, 2025, and the update exercise will be conducted at update stations throughout Uganda, starting from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, on each of the appointed dates, including doing weekends.
