The water levels at Katonga River have risen significantly, posing a serious risk to motorists and pedestrians attempting to cross on the Kampala-Masaka highway.
The floods are a result of the ongoing heavy downpours in various parts of Uganda, which have submerged the River Katonga Bridge, paralyzing traffic on the usually busy Kampala-Masaka highway.
According to motorists, the water, which started rising at around 6 a.m., has made it difficult to cross the bridge.
For safety reasons, the Police and Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) have strongly advised motorists and pedestrians to use alternative routes as the authority tries to promptly address the situation.
UNRA has issued a flood alert and also advised motorists to use gazetted alternative routes.
“Travellers from Kampala are encouraged to utilize the Mpigi-Butambala-Ssembabule road as a viable alternative. Individuals traveling from Masaka are advised to take the Masaka-Ssembabule Road as a diversion. Please exercise caution, follow traffic instructions, and watch out for further updates. Your safety is our utmost priority,” a statement issued by UNRA stated.
The recent heavy downpours have caused various landslides, mudslides, and road blockages, posing a risk to road users and causing traffic jams.
