UNBS Impounds over 100 Substandard tyres in Kampala

Uganda National Bureau Standards has impounded hundreds of substandard tyres downtown Kampala in an operation to counter poor-quality goods on the market.

According to Aduru Dennis, an official at UNBS, the operation carried out on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, follows a series of public outcry on substandard goods on market.

“There have been a number of complaints about the safety of tires sold on the Ugandan markets, and as UNBS, we have responded to this and we have impounded hundreds of nonconformity tires,” Aduru said.

He said that quite a number of tyres impounded were deformed and some of them were poorly stored.

“Some of the storage places are damp, so the quality is affected with time. Such tyres that are damaged or defective, are quantified and impounded,” he added.

Some of the cooperators downtown appreciated the operation to crack down on substandard products on the market, saying they would be able to sell and purchase standard tires without any worries.

UNBS cautioned traders against retreading pneumatic tires, stacking them inside one another during importation and transportation, storing them directly on the floor and under direct light from skylights, windows, doors and other openings.
