UNATU calls off strike, orders teachers to resume work immediately

UNATU SG Filbert Baguma

The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) has temporarily called off the strike and ordered the striking teachers to resume work with immediate effect.

In a letter signed by the UNATU General Secretary, Baguma Filbert Bate, all teachers are directed to be in class and teaching by June 29th, 2022, Wednesday.

For three weeks, teachers have been striking over what they termed as discriminative pay rise.

Baguma said five UNATU Executive members have been invited for a meeting with the Ministry of Public Service on Friday July 1st to discuss the matter.

He says they are also expecting to have a meeting with the President to have the issues of both Science and Arts teachers discussed as a whole.

In his letter, Baguma further told teachers to resume work and adhere to teachers’ professional code of conduct as stipulated in the Education Service Act No. 13 0f 2022.

The decision to call off the strike by UNATU stemmed from the government’s commitment to mediate over the matter.

On Monday, Minister of Public Service, Wilson Muruli Mukasa said government was in talks with UNATU to have the strike called off.
