In a recent audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Uganda’s aviation safety measures have shown a remarkable improvement, according to State Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama. The audit, known as the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme – Continuous Monitoring Approach (USOAP-CMA), took place from September 6 to 18, 2023.
During a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, Byamukama revealed that Uganda scored an impressive 72.17% in the audit, exceeding the regional/Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAF) average of 55.66% and the global average of 67.68%. The evaluation aimed to assess the effectiveness of Uganda’s safety oversight systems, ensuring compliance with the ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
Byamukama emphasised that this noteworthy audit score is a testament to Uganda’s commitment to aviation safety, instilling confidence within the international aviation community. The audit’s positive outcome demonstrates that Uganda complies with the stringent standards set by ICAO.
ICAO, a specialised agency operating under the United Nations, is dedicated to fostering uniform development and progress in civil aviation among its 193 contracting member states. By establishing harmonised standards and recommended practices, ICAO guides member states in implementing effective safety measures. Uganda has been a member of ICAO since 1967 and, as a Contracting Member State, must abide by the provisions set forth in the Chicago Convention and adhere to the standards outlined in the 19 Annexes to the Convention.
Uganda’s aviation sector welcomes this improved safety rating with enthusiasm, as it signifies the nation’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its airspace. The positive audit results are expected to strengthen Uganda’s position as an aviation hub in the Eastern and Southern Africa region and attract more international airlines to operate within the country.
With this latest achievement, Uganda’s aviation industry is poised to continue its upward trajectory by enhancing its safety oversight measures, promoting efficient air transportation, and prioritising the well-being of passengers and crew members.
