Uganda Cranes Secures Crucial Win in AFCON Qualifiers

The Uganda Cranes on Monday, September 9th, secured a critical win after beating Congo Brazzaville in a 2:0 match played at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Following the win, Uganda’s hope for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier in Morocco was immensely renewed.

The goals were from Abdu Aziiz Kayondo and substitute Jude Ssemugabi, sealing the win for Uganda.

The Cranes took the lead in the 21st minute when Kayondo’s cross from the left flank curved into the back of the net, catching the Congo goalkeeper, Pavelh Ndzila, off guard.

Coach Paul Put made a substitution in the 44th minute, bringing on Jude Ssemugabi for Muhammad Shaban.

However, the substitution paid off in the second half when Ssemugabi scored Uganda’s second goal in the 86th minute, a cross from Allan Okello to secure the victory.

Uganda leads Group K with four points, Congo Brazzaville is in second place with three points, South Africa has one point, and South Sudan is currently at the bottom with no points.

South Africa will be playing South Sudan on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in Juba.
Next up for the Uganda Cranes is a home fixture against South Sudan on October 11, 2024.

On Friday, September 6, 2024, Uganda drew 2:2 with South Africa in their first opening campaign for 2025 AFCON, scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco.
