On 5th December 2022, Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Volunteers Day (IVD). The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is partnered with Habitat for Humanity Uganda on this celebration.

According to the press statement released on 5th December by the Minister for Lands, housing and urban development, the celebration provides opportunity to raise awareness of and gain more understanding for the contribution volunteers make to the communities.

“We join the world in celebrating honoring and galvanizing the efforts of commitment and resilience that the volunteers exhibit to promote development work including that of organization like Habitat for Humanity in Uganda and Uganda as a country,” the statement read.

For 40 years now, Habitat for Humanity has been partnering with Government, district and families to improve the living conditions of Ugandans through helping them access to decent shelter.

According to the State Minister for Lands, housing and urban development Princess Persis Namuganza, during this period, Habitat for Humanity has transformed the lives of over1.5 million Ugandans by building over building over 200,000 houses for the vulnerable members of society and all those have been achieved through voluntarism.

However, this year’s National celebration will not take place because of the health situation in the country.

Government calls upon all Ugandans and organizations to embrace voluntarism in order to help fellow Ugandans have a decent roof over their heads and make this country a better place for all.

In 1985, United Nations set this day annually to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. This day also provides an opportunity to volunteers and organization to celebrate their efforts, share their values and promote their work among communities, non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, Government authorities and private sectors.
