The Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala, and Bageya Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, have commissioned 20 Flatbed Wagons on October 20, 2023, at Uganda Railways Corporation (URC). These wagons, rehabilitated by the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA), aim to enhance the capacity of URC in serving transporters on the Central Corridor.
During the ceremony, the CCTTFA also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with URC to refurbish 100 tank trainers and 140 covered wagons.
“Uganda is a crucial connection on the Central Corridor. To ensure a seamless flow of cargo to our neighboring countries, such as Congo and South Sudan, it is essential to strengthen our capacity,” remarked Wamala.
He emphasized that failure to do so would result in cargo congestion at Mwanza, reflecting poorly on Uganda. Wamala stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to enable the corridor to function efficiently, with a smooth inflow and outflow of cargo.
The Central Corridor route has been gaining popularity, and these efforts to improve its viability are expected to contribute to its continued success.
