Uganda Electricity Distribution Company has assured Ugandans that there will not be any disruption in service provision during the transition to provide electricity services to Ugandans.
This comes after UMEME’s contract was not renewed by the government in 2022. It has been providing this service to the country for 20 years.
During a public hearing organized on October 22, 2024, to teach Ugandans about UEDCL’s intentions after UMEME exits, the Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa emphasized that the organization he leads is well equipped and ready to handle the project.
He emphasized that there will not be any disruption even on the day they are handed the responsibility.
“The business is expanding; we need to make more installations on top of taking back those held by Umeme because they are ours, and we shall therefore have to take all the employees at Umeme,” Mwesigwa said.
UEDCL is one of the companies that asked to be given back this responsibility of providing electricity to the country after UMEME added that even more vacancies and jobs will be created once they take over.
Umeme will continue with normal operations until the last day, including receiving and processing electricity connections for new customers.
