The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) launched a pilot project on December 3, 2024, to distribute 500 solar-powered tablets to selected households in 23 rural districts across Uganda.

This initiative, funded by the Uganda Communications Universal Service Access Fund (UCUSAF), aims to enhance digital inclusion and access to information and communications technology (ICT) services in underserved areas in order to combat household poverty by providing free tablets that will enable beneficiaries to access a range of digital services, including education, healthcare, and financial resources.

Eng. Nyombi Thembo, the UCC’s Executive Director, emphasized the importance of bridging the digital divide and ensuring all Ugandans can benefit from ICT.

“We are committed to promoting digital inclusion and increasing access to ICT services in Uganda,” Eng. Nyombi said.

He added that this project is part of the government efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure that all Ugandans have access to the benefits of ICT.

This project is part of a broader effort to promote digital inclusion and increase access to ICT services in Uganda in which the government has set a target of achieving universal access to ICT services by 2025.

The initiative has been welcomed by stakeholders in the ICT sector, who believe it will help to promote digital inclusion and increase access to ICT services in rural Uganda.
