UCC Hosts Regional Cybersecurity Summit to Address Emerging Threats

The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC), in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and Computer Emergency Response Team, is organising the Regional Cybersecurity Summit for Africa on November 20, 2023, with the aim of enhancing national frameworks with international standards.

While opening the Regional Cybersecurity Summit at UCC House on November 20, 2023, Engineer Irene Kaggwa, the Uganda Communication Commission executive director, stated that the Regional Cybersecurity Summit for Africa aims to foster dialogue about cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, and cyber resilience, in line with international standards and obligations.

“This meeting provides a platform for cybersecurity experts from our region and beyond to share experiences and best practices on readiness, resilience, and coordination regarding how to safeguard critical infrastructure and respond to emerging cybersecurity threats”, said Kaggwa.

She stated that the interconnected nature of the world’s calls for global collaboration is to effectively deal with the challenges of cybersecurity in Uganda as a country. And also to foster dialogue about cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, and cyber resilience

Kaggwa also explained that while growth in digital finance is welcomed, it also broadens the scope for cybercriminals to exploit vulnerabilities in the DFS ecosystem, potentially leading to financial and reputational loss and erosion of public confidence in these services.

The UCC Digital Transformation Roadmap identified pillars that are critical in attaining the Digital Uganda Vision, and Pillar 3 covers cybersecurity, data protection, and privacy. This aims to ensure that digital services are safe, secure, and trusted.
