Two people have been confirmed dead after a motorcycle had a head-on collision near Mpamujugu swamp.
The deceased have been identified as Robert Walugembe and Masudi, a mechanic at Kiyooganyi village.
According to the police report the incident happened in Mpamujugu swamp that borders Mityana and Kassanda Districts on Tuesday 20, 2024 when motorcycle registration number UFB 842W and motorcycle number registration UFC 682K moving from Mityana District to Kassanda had a head-on collision while Robert Walugembe was taking his daughter to school.
The young girl was taken to Mityana Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
The bodies have since been taken to Mityana Hospital for postmortem as investigations continue.
However eyewitnesses allege that Masudi lost control and rammed into another motorcycle due to overspeeding amidst the morning mist.
Road accidents are unfortunately a common occurrence in Uganda, with thousands of fatalities reported each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda has one of the highest road traffic fatality rates in the world, with an estimated 10,000 deaths annually. The majority of these accidents are attributed to reckless driving, overspeeding, and poor road infrastructure.
