Travellers Resort to Kikagate-Isingiro Border Following Closure of Burundi-Rwanda Border

Business in Insigiro is predicted to boom as transporters resort to using the Kikagate-Isingiro border as a solution to the closed Burundi-Rwanda border.

On January 16, 2024, Iteka Service and Platinum, a Ugandan bus company that used to travel from Kampala to Bujumbura through Rwanda, has resorted to using the Kikagate Border Post located in Isingoro district, via the Tanzania-Kobero Burundi border route.

Burundi closed its border to Rwanda nearly two weeks ago, amidst political and diplomatic tensions. The decision restricted the free movement of goods, services, and people among neighbouring countries like Uganda.

According to the bus company, the majority of buses from Burundi to Uganda will start travelling via the Kikagate Border if the new route proves to be effective, which will also boost local business in that area.

By 9 a.m. on January 16, a total of approximately 30 passengers had registered and were getting ready to travel, the bus company stated.

It is unknown when the Rwanda-Burundi border will be available for use, as relations between Burundi and Rwanda have frequently been turbulent.

In Kigali, the government said it “regrets the unilateral closure of the border by Burundi.

The closure of the Burundi-Rwanda border stemmed from allegations made by the Burundi government that Rwanda was hosting and training the Red Tabara rebels, who carried out attacks on its territory.
