Toyota has suspended operations at all of its assembly plants in Japan due to a hitch in its production system. This suspension of 12 out of the 14 assembly plants took effect on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. However, later in the day, the spokesperson said that production at all 14 facilities would be suspended.
This action has brought production to a halt at the biggest car-making plant. The defect means that the firm has not been able to order the necessary features.
The firm’s spokesperson said that the firm is trying to find the cause of the problem but so far does not believe that it is due to a hack.
The suspension comes as Toyota’s production in Japan has been recovering after a series of issues, for example, when its operations were hit last year after one of its suppliers was affected by malware.
Due to a 24-hour break in production, it has already caused an output loss of around 13,000 cars.
In 2022, Toyota suspended operations at some of its production lines in Japan due to the coronavirus lockdown in Shanghai which is China’s economic hub.
Toyota is yet to confirm when it plans to resume operations or how much production is anticipated to be lost due to this suspension.
A total of 14 plants are estimated to account for about a third of Toyota’s global production.
Toyota is a pioneer of the so-called “just-in-time” production system, which keeps costs down but can be vulnerable to problems if deliveries of production features are disrupted.
