The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has warned about heavy downpours expected in the months of June, July, and August 2023, in the northern and eastern regions.
In their forecast, UNMA Chief Executive Festus Luboyera told the media in Kampala on Thursday that in the coming weeks, there could be El Nino weather conditions that are characterized by heavy and long downpours in the northern and eastern regions.
The western and central parts of Uganda will experience very low rains until mid-June, when there will be an increase to moderate rains up to August.
Luboyera, however, says that these regions are expected to get lower levels of rain than normal, while in the north and east, the current rains will continue and post a better rainy season than in the rest of the country.
Dr. Ogwang, a director at UNMA, warned the relevant authorities to put in place measures to avert possible negative impacts that may arise, and urban centers should clear drainage in time to avert flash flooding in urban areas.
“The public is advised not to drive or work through flooded areas or moving waters. Lightning strikes are likely in most areas of the country. The public is advised not to take shelter near metallic structures or under trees,’’ he said.
Health-wise, Dr. Ogwang also warned of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, especially in areas that are likely to receive heavy rains, so health authorities are therefore advised to redistribute medical supplies and treated mosquito nets in the affected areas.
On the issue of transport and public safety, he warned that there is a likelihood of flash floods occurring in areas likely to receive near-normal rainfall. This may lead to structural damages on the roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, which may, in turn, lead to transport challenges, damage to property, and loss of lives.
