The Town Clerk of Sheema Municipality, Samuel Ahabwe, has survived being lynched by the angry teachers who were protesting delayed salary payment.
On Thursday, November 10th, angry teachers stormed Sheema Municipality offices, demanding a concrete explanation for why they haven’t been paid for several months.
They accused Ahabwe of not presenting a satisfactory explanation as to why their salaries hadn’t been paid. Some claimed they haven’t been paid for about four months; others claimed they haven’t received salary enhancements since July, even when they fell into the category of teachers whose salaries were increased.
The teachers ran out of patience when Town Clerk Ahabwe took his time to explain challenges as to why teachers’ salaries haven’t been paid, a move that encouraged them to force Ahabwe to put his private vehicle away and force him to resign.
Veriano Kamugisha, a teacher, wondered why he had not received salary increases since July 2022.
“How does the town clerk expect us to survive or even pay fees for our own children? This is beyond,” he said.
Ahabwe later accepted to meet the rowdy teachers, where he pledged that their salaries would be paid soon.
“The delay in salary payment was because of the wage shortfall and the system challenges,” he said.
